Magdalena Ball #3 The Government’s Lottery responding to Toby Fitch #1 Feel Like I'm Somehow Related to Everyone on the Internet

The Government’s Lottery

Pretty cold dirty violent snowy violent
my life created by a random plot generator
before Earth became a meme

in the lottery my number came up
the letter telling me the good news was written in pencil
an aerogramme which I tore upon opening

images of threatened marsupials
hand drawn by the philatelic team
there was no money in the prize just weapons

I had my pick an open door but due to having saved
the world ten years previously to no avail
nothing appealed

I left on a dusty road no foliage no music
pretending to be real leant into the clock
woke in the future or maybe it was the past

it’s so hard to tell these days
you can’t find a newspaper it’s all autogenerated
with an unknown matrix input

there wasn’t any blue just the crush of lilacs
after five days smelling outrage
we had nothing left but a neon sign

it blinked slowly so I was able to take my time
reading between the luminous gas-discharge tubes
a recursive story that told me everything
I didn’t want to know.

Susan Fealy #1 They struggle--some--for Breath

                                      They struggle—some—for Breath

                                              We steer them through black-
                                              rivered asphalt,
                                              this casual one-handed gesture
                                              of save yourself.

                                              They are parachutes,
                                              unattached to us,
                                              bubbles,
                                              strong enough
                                              to welcome us in.

His, so large and deep and indigo
he travels beneath a private sky.

Hers with black and white spots so fine
they make the sound and sight of rain.

                                              Peak hour shoulders
                                              tumble navy against grey,
                                              grant him room to disembark—
                                              he holds its body gently
as if a bird had splayed
                                              damp wings across his hand.

Note: Title is a line from Emily Dickinson’s untitled
poem which begins ‘You've seen Balloons set—Haven't You?’

Toby Fitch #2 Fractoidal responding to Ed Wright #1 Float Tank

Fractoidal

A blue whale’s heart is the size of a Volkswagen
you could swim through its arteries.
The spotted hyena female has a very large clitoris
such that it’s often mistaken for the male.
In ancient natural histories the hyena is described as an
animal which changes back and forth between the two genders.
The English language doesn’t switch gender, grammatically
speaking. Electrical devices have alternating current

but don't care which direction the electrons are moving;
the same amount of current flows through a circuit regardless
of its genre. Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking”
is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground
at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks
and release natural gas inside. Up to 600 chemicals are used
in fracking fluid, incl. known carcinogens and toxins.
“Fractal” comes from the Latin “fractus,” meaning “broken.”

The 1883 explosion of the volcano Krakatau shot
so much dust into the earth’s atmosphere
sunsets appeared green and the moon appeared blue.
A fractal must be irregular in shape. Most objects in nature
don’t have simple geometric shapes. Clouds, trees, and mountains
for e.g. don’t usually look like circles, triangles or pyramids.
In
Apollo 13 a picture of the moon was generated by fractals.
No matter how far it zoomed in the detail was preserved.

Scientists have created a Pollockizer to measure
and prove the fractal genius of Jackson Pollock but the results
proved fractal bunk. The first bunk beds
are said to have originated in ancient Egypt. Ditto
suspicions of cats and the pregnancy test. Egyptians were
crazily accurate with math: a woman would be laid
on a mash of beer and dates and pregnancy
would be determined by how much she vomited. Myth

being a memory we’ve forgotten isn’t real. The present
fake news squished between historical
and future strata. Not all stress fractures show up on x-ray.
Evel Knievel suffered 433 to his bones
and literally burnt bridges. If prose is a house,
poetry is a man on fire running quite fast through it,
knowing without knowing how
moondust smells like burnt gunpowder.

Feel Like I’m Somehow Related to Everyone on the Internet

I am outraged / have been as long as I can remember
The sky’s a projector & the moon was brought here by aliens
To keep us informed of the shitstorms going on
I am outraged / been a member for as long as I can
Crushes are nice until you realise how hard you’re crushing
On the shitstorm that keeps you informed of
Slang for political or social awareness
Crashes are nice until we realise how hard we’ve crashed
Zeitgeist moves all the way down
Slang for political or social airyness
Intending to automate replies to those who
Zeitgeist all the way down / Move!
R we just gonna ignore the fact it’s been raining 9 days straight
Intoning an automated replay to those who
When you want to get trashed get recycled instead
R we just gonna straighten out all 90 ignorant facts on a rainy day
The government uses the lottery to catch time-travellers
You want to recycle but trash it dead
White beatniks appropriating black culture
The lottery of time-travel caught the government out
Continued to bubble to the digital surface for the next 50 years
White beatniks appropriating black culture
In both ironic & non-ironic ways on all platforms

The sky’s a projector & the moon was brought here by aliens
In both ironic & non-ironic ways on all platforms
Feel like I’m everywhere / related to the internet now somehow

Vivek Narayanan #1: 'Same Words': a response to Cui Yuwei's 'Key Words'

See Cui Yuwei's Key Words here.

Same Words

Looked at me thinking I was one of them,
did the foreigners living in my city.
They like to wear grey and recite
          Bukowski.  These people!  Such beggars
            of attention, such fancy merchants
of fart and feces and pee!  How the hell do they think
they can get away with using all the same words, just culled
from the sorting of the poems of the year?  Nothing but
disabled mouthpieces, prostitutes!  I’m not one of them, believe me, believe me.

(on a bus  the only other passengers
        my mom and her daughter
      later I’ll keep the story
from the students in my class, disappear
          behind the peasant workers
of
                   a textbook’s pencilish sketch)

Ed Wright #1 Float Tank

Float tank

Rosie reckons it’s like the ‘90s again
and there is a loop to it
how ritual recycles time to create
illusions of timelessness
the whales sing you in
to spirals of self
a going round gossamer
it’s dark in here
fear is never far away
that’s the price of entry
not just to this stuck cocoon
and salty amniotic womb
don't panic; it’s only
from the inside that we can escape
the done deal of ourselves
only by going to the duller repetitions,
thuds of the heart, the in outs of the breath …

the whales are returning now
it’s time to open the hatch
of the egg.
