Anne Kellas #5 - Dawn, with dove, in response to Kit Kelen #17

in response to Kit Kelen #17 - the poem strayed, responding to the line, “Sermon is a kind of sleep” link:

A dove calls.
His song is sermon.
A kind of sleep. A conversation
not a psalm. At dawn.

In a shadow, he hides himself. In his place high up.
Tucks his wings down. Calls again.
In conversation. A sermon to himself.
Settles. Feathers, silk.

Something flagrant, loud
drones in the desert
with manufactured wind and dust.
No tree cover. Torn things

pepper the land.
He does not judge.
Though sounds like bullets reach him
in his feathers, silk,

the dove is quiet,
ignorant of his place in psalms
where he’s written into music
as "the mute dove of distant places".

Translation of a dove. For the lead singer.
Who also calls, cries out to his God:
What can man do to me?
From his vantage point

the mute dove of distant places
can see the grey man singing.
In the metal light
his feathers shine.

  1. I am not sure about the word metal in the last verse, I added it late in the piece and it feels wrong to me. Comments welcomed.
