Kit Kelen #6 - open the hatches of the egg (for and after Ed Wright)

open the hatches of the egg

for and after Ed Wright

take a suntumble
go on

last things have a life of their own

because there is no other side
it's important to do a good death

will you come with me?
say fond adieu

tribes and nations
lost in prayer
have never been seen since

you could vanish anywhere
I choose the garden

golden and golden
next ages are

much by moon
this blindness
love! so generations lost
hate equally! bare knuckles to

many have just bundied off

many are eaten alive
some eat dog as dogs do

some sink in a city
some soar beyond clouds

all gone
the hundred billion of my kind
and every year we're ever so much
eat almost as many
of others
unkind!

perhaps if just
in the garden we grew
as a single thought
will grow into time

trying to answer
one question will do

or the big bang might have been a murmur

was that really it to begin?
one doubts this

the scale may be grand
but who was it heard
this first forest grow?

if there are fifteen billion years
why not fifteen billion more?

so many first things were never beginnings
so many beginnings weren't first

like cutting teeth
there was bone before that

the sea is flat from a storm before
what you held in your hand sets free
sets off
but the journey is never really beginning
because there's a road to show
feet have already been

if that metaphor will not serve
consider this life reciting the self
the words where they have always been

and the world was a clock spun on

if difference is just that
then
how was it, is it, to begin?

o happy vanishing that way
lives not lost
but we all find
in our hearts
the thanking time

first death I die will be an instance
unique, but I know, only to me

you could vanish anywhere
I choose the garden

won't you down tools
just be?

let's cast
an eye about
let's sit still
for a while

so much open to discussion
and yet no second chance

though scope for planning's limited
nevertheless there's an imperative
to try to get it right
